How to Become a Skywarn Storm Spotter





Becoming a Skywarn Storm Spotter is a lot easier than you might think it is. You just have to be able to commit some time for training. Training is free and very important because it teaches you the basic fundamentals of becoming a Certified Skywarn Storm Spotter. Training helps you stay safe while saving lives. Training is easy and there are not real testing requirements to be completed. Continue reading below for different methods of receiving Skywarn Storm Spotter training and becoming certified quickly.

NWS Skywarn Classroom Training
The best form of Skywarn Storm Spotter training is likely going to be from attending a physical classroom environment presented by the National Weather Service (NWS) or an official partner of the NWS. Most classes are held in the early spring months but other class schedules might also be present. To find out about classes in your area, go to the NWS Organization Offices page to select your NWS Weather Forecast Office website. Once you have found the closest NWS office to you, click on their link from that page. Now look for a link to "spotter training" or "skywarn" or something similar to find information about upcoming spotter training presented by the National Weather Service in your area.

NWS Skywarn Online Training
Alternatively, you can usually find online and "webinar" training schedules by following the instructions above. The NWS provided online webinar training allows you to watch the training from your home in case you are not able to travel.

MetED Skywarn Spotter Training
Many National Weather Service offices will recognize training and certification from utilizing the free and online (take at your own pace and anytime) MetED Skywarn Spotter Training course. After you register, complete the training and complete and pass the course - you might need to contact your local NWS office to inform them that you have taken the training and to confirm if they will accept such form of training.

If you are to be issued an ID#, it should be issued to you after you have completed your training course. However, not all NWS offices will issues spotter ID numbers and some offices issue the same number to an entire group of trained spotters. If you have not been issued an ID #, chances are, you will not be issued one in the future.
